Welcome to
Franklin!
Franklin, Tennessee,
seriously oozes charm.
Just
south of Nashville, visitors come from all over the world to lovely
Franklin.
Southern Living
magazine readers call it one of their "Five Favorite Small Towns."
The National Trust for Historic
Preservation says it's one of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations for 2009.
In Franklin,
visitors are treated to classic Southern antebellum architecture as well
as cute cottages and bungalows. They can shop at chic boutiques--several
recently featured in the New York Times-- and dine at trendy
restaurants on a tree-shaded Main Street. All
in all, it's a delightful, often nostalgic place to visit. Sorta takes you
back!
Yet Franklin has a tragic
and sometimes sordid past.
The grisly Battle of Franklin and gruesome
aftermath scarred the town's collective memory. The Civil War devastated
the Southern economy. Life was never the same.
Criminal activity was commonplace. Murders, suicides, all manner of
violent crime--just part of life.
And when life ends violently or suddenly or is
cut short, sometimes spirits are left behind.
Many buildings in Franklin have ghosts and spirits in residence. Some are
historic 18th century buildings, while others are new, but built on the
battlefield of Franklin where many thousands died.
But Franklin's history is more than
tragedy. Most of the time, it's such a great place to live that nobody
wants to leave...even after they die.
So they don't! And that's
where I come in .
I'm Margie Thessin.
I started doing historic
walking tours for the Heritage Foundation of Franklin, Tennessee in 1996.
Later I co-founded (with my friend and now business partner Rene Evans) Franklin
on Foot. At first, we weren't going to do ghost tours, but after
hearing some of Franklin's amazing ghost stories, we decided that these
were tales that would certainly entertain and often spook our visitors.
And guess what? Our ghost tour immediately became our most popular tour,
and remains so to this day.
Along the way, many
tour-goers requested a book of these very same ghost stories. After
additional research, I wrote and published Ghosts of Franklin,
Tennessee's Most Haunted Town in 2008.
